JOHN
CHELLEW
Born: September 12, 1954
Chilhowie, Virginia
I have lived in central North Carolina most of my life, beginning in
Durham, where my father was attending Southeastern Seminary, studying
to become a baptist minister. His first church was Macedonia Baptist
Church in Liberty, NC. From there we moved to Pinecroft Baptist Church
in Greensboro where I attended Archer Elementary. Growing up I
enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and football. My father,
who was born in Toronto, Canada, became a naturalized citizen while
living here. He played hockey as a young boy (goalie) and became head
linesman for the Greensboro Generals during our stay here in the
1960's. From Greensboro we moved to Gibsonville, Atlanta, GA., and
then to Danville, VA., where I graduated from George Washington High
School in 1972. In 1974 I joined the United States Air Force and
served for 4 years as an Arabic Linguist. I was stationed at the
Presidio of Monterrey in California, Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo,
TX., and worked at NSA at Fort Meade, Md.. After being honorably
discharged in 1979 I went to work for the United States Postal Service
until my retirement in September 2015. I enjoy playing golf and also
making music, performing in local venues with my oldest daughter’s
band “Lowkey.” I have two other daughters that also live in the area
along with five grandchildren. My wife Susie and I will celebrate our
10th anniversary in July 2017. She is currently an Assistant Principal
at Southwest Middle School and plans to retire in 2018.
